Greek villagers take on Canadian mining giant El DoradoIn the northern Greek district of Halkidiki, better known for its pristine beaches and emerald seas, residents are engaged in a bitter struggle with Greek-Canadian mining company El Dorado, who are determined to start gold extraction in the area.

Greek environmental activists and local residents gathered on Sunday to protest the construction of a gold mine they claim will bring about ecological disaster to the Ierissos region of Halkidiki in northern Greece.

The open mine which is being reopened by the Canadian mining giant ElDorado in conjunction with its Greek partner the Aktor construction company.

The struggle between residents and the companies has grown increasingly violent with the riot police units employing tear gas and plastic bullets to break up protest marches.
